Love and hate

17 maart 2017 - South West Rocks, Australië

So here we are, almost 5 days later and about 600KM down south of Brisbane in a small coastal town called West Coast Rock.  I have just spend the last three days in Byron Bay, one of the more popular surf spots on the central coast line with beautiful beaches (especially the secret ones of the main roads), steep cliffs and walking trails.    And as Australia has a campsite pretty around every corner it wasn't too hard, with a little help from the lonely planet, to find nice place just a minute walking from the beach  at Broken Head. So up till now everything sounds all good right?  Well, there is a reason for the name of the title.....which is.....RAIN and STORM!!!! Apparently it hadn't rained since the beginning of this year and now a huge storm is passing through the entire east coast for about a week or so. And not just a bit of rain but buckets at a time.  Now I better understand the impressive greenness of the area with its rainforests and colourful country side.  However, why did it have to happen just now when I am here trying to escape it from the Netherlands????  So when you look at the pictures of sunshine, some surf, peaceful beach town etc etc, yes...luckily there have been some hours, well a half day at least, when it was like that and then this place is absolutely brilliant.  That was yesterday and my best day since I have been here in Aussie. Even with my little experience in surfing I can tell these are one of best rides there are.  Though short, I have been able to enjoy them actually together with a guy I met in Bali in January who owns a surfschool in England and was here for his last month escaping the cold winter season over there.  Then, based on the recommendation of one of the locals, I headed towards this spot hoping to do some amazing diving with seals and into caves. Fully optimistic I head out this morning and drove 350KM to arrive just an hour ago.  The ride here was impressive. Ranches with picked fences, lots of Black Angus cows, exits to national parks left and right, and of course, the coastline. BUT....as I am writing this update I am sitting in my little camper, locked inside as in prison, on a deserted campsite, whilst outside it is pouring down so hard that the streets have turned in to muddy pools and you see the desperation on people's faces.  And I am questioning myself, what in the h.....ll are am doing here!  But there is nothing I can do.  Time to read, write, and wait until the rainy skies turn into sunny skies again.   I may skip this whole diving thing though and head straight for Sydney.   When I write you next, you will know:)

    Hi son,
This message I am writing from the Low Lands up North where the sun hides behind thick clouds, the fields are glossy from the heavy rains and the temperature is a poor 13 degrees C. Fortunately we have heating and some good music as life would become unbearable without.
Watch it! Thought the rain was bad? Sydney will be lashed by 90km/h wind gusts – as a month's worth of rain is set to fall on NSW in 48 HOURS.
Things will then dry out a little bit but any reprieve will be short lived, with the rain returning until this time next week at the earliest. I feel very sorry for you. You better not head North again as this will not help. Buy yourself a good book, put on some music you like and poor yourself a good glass of Jacob's Creek till better times come and you can follow the sun again.
